In fact,\u00a0Autumn Read Henning, a speech language pathologist, estimates that approximately <strong>70 percent of her own patients with a tongue tie have a known relative with the condition, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/gene\/MTHFR#conditions\">emerging evidence<\/a> that the MTHFR gene plays a role in the formation of the mouth, including the lips. <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/aje\/article\/157\/7\/583\/69692\">This study<\/a> reported that those with <strong>certain MTHFR mutations have a sevenfold risk of developing a cleft palate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to note there is still much to be learned about MTHFR mutations, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Jacques_Elion\/publication\/13772084_Analysis_of_the_677_CT_Mutation_of_the_Methylenetetrahydrofolate_Reductase_Gene_in_Different_Ethnic_Groups\/links\/0c96052c19ee9ad2f4000000\/Analysis-of-the-677-CT-Mutation-of-the-Methylenetetrahydrofolate-Reductase-Gene-in-Different-Ethnic-Groups.pdf\">researchers do believe<\/a> <strong>this specific genetic mutation is more common in Caucasian and Asian populations<\/strong>. It appears to be slightly rarer in Amerindian populations, and significantly lower in Black populations.<\/p>\n    \r\n    <h2 id=\"how-common-are-lip-ties\">\r\n      How Common Are Lip Ties?    <\/h2>\r\n    \r\n    \n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drghaheri.com\">Dr. Ghaheri<\/a>,\u00a0an ENT at the Oregon Clinic,\u00a0says a lip tie is much less common than a <a href=\"https:\/\/mamanatural.com\/tongue-tie\/\">tongue tie<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0a condition where a short, tight piece of tissue below the tongue restricts its range of motion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A tongue tie is also more likely to affect breastfeeding, because the tongue is unable to move up.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That said, a lip-tied baby can have trouble breastfeeding, because it&#8217;s harder to flange the upper lip.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n    \r\n    <h2 id=\"if-your-baby-has-a-lip-tie-does-that-mean-he-she-has-a-tongue-tie\">\r\n      If Your Baby Has a Lip Tie Does That Mean He\/She Has a Tongue Tie?    <\/h2>\r\n    \r\n    \n<p><strong>If baby has a lip tie, it does not mean he\/she has a tongue tie.\u00a0<\/strong>In the womb, the area under the tongue and the area between the upper lip and the gum line develop at different times and by different processes, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.llli.org\/breastfeeding-today\/\">Breastfeeding Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The belief that most babies have both a lip tie and a tongue tie probably stems from a reflex that links the tongue and the lip, making it difficult for a baby to move one independent of the other. <strong>The two conditions should be evaluated separately<\/strong>.<\/p>\n    \r\n    <h2 id=\"how-to-tell-if-your-baby-has-a-lip-tie\">\r\n      How to Tell If Your Baby Has a Lip Tie?    <\/h2>\r\n    \r\n    \n<p>If your baby hasn&#8217;t been evaluated for a lip tie, talk to a healthcare provider if you notice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.llli.org\/breastfeeding-info\/tongue-lip-ties\/\">the following signs<\/a> of a lip tie:<\/p>\n<h3>If baby has a lip tie, they may<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Be unable to latch deeply, if at all, causing nipple pain and damage<\/li>\n<li>Have difficulties staying on the breast<\/li>\n<li>Make a clicking sound<\/li>\n<li>Splutter or choke on milk<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mamanatural.com\/cluster-feeding\/\">Cluster feed<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Exhibit poor weight gain<\/li>\n<li>Be at risk for <a href=\"https:\/\/mamanatural.com\/bottle-rot\/\">bottle rot<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Develop<a href=\"https:\/\/mamanatural.com\/jaundice-in-newborn\/\"> jaundice<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Be excessively fussy or develop colic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>If baby has a lip tie, mama may<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience pain during feedings<\/li>\n<li>Have damaged or distorted nipples (often they&#8217;ll notice a wedge shape)<\/li>\n<li>Develop engorgement, blocked, ducts, or <a href=\"https:\/\/mamanatural.com\/mastitis\/\">mastitis<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Have milk supply issues (low supply due to ineffective removal; oversupply due to a demanding nursing schedule)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n    \r\n    <h2 id=\"what-does-a-lip-tie-look-like\">\r\n      What Does a Lip Tie Look Like?    <\/h2>\r\n    \r\n    \n<p>To confirm whether your baby has a lip tie, get a consult with:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant<\/strong> who will have specific training in diagnosing lip and tongue ties. <a href=\"https:\/\/mamanatural.com\/how-to-find-a-lactation-consultant\/\">Here&#8217;s how to find one near you<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A Holistic Dentist<\/strong> who has experience with diagnosing and treating lip ties. You can find one <a href=\"http:\/\/holisticdental.org\/find-a-holistic-dentist\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Of course, you can have your child&#8217;s pediatrician look at your child&#8217;s mouth, but be aware that <strong>some doctors are not trained at diagnosing a lip tie (or its severity) in babies.<\/strong><\/p>\n    \r\n    <h2 id=\"does-a-lip-tie-affect-breastfeeding\">\r\n      Does a Lip Tie Affect Breastfeeding?    <\/h2>\r\n    \r\n    \n<p>A lip tie can affect breastfeeding. It really depends on the severity of the lip tie, as well as the child and mother dynamic. (If you think about it, there are countless things that could impact nursing: nipple shape, child&#8217;s palate formation, alertness of child, etc.)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Depending on the severity of the lip tie, breastfeeding a baby with this condition can be a painful and frustrating experience for mama <em>and<\/em> baby\u2014so be sure to seek help if you suspect a lip tie.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>To improve the breastfeeding experience:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mamanatural.com\/how-to-find-a-lactation-consultant\/\">Find an IBCLC lactation consultant<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Soften breasts:\u00a0<\/strong>Engorgement may make it especially difficult for baby to latch. If your breasts are too full, hand\u00a0express or <a href=\"https:\/\/mamanatural.com\/pumping-breast-milk\/\">pump<\/a> a bit of milk before continuing to feed baby.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Try another <a href=\"https:\/\/mamanatural.com\/breastfeeding-positions\/\">breastfeeding position<\/a>: <\/strong>Baby\u00a0can generally get a better latch when <a href=\"https:\/\/mamanatural.com\/skin-to-skin\/\">skin-to-skin<\/a> with mom. Laid-back nursing is particularly helpful with a lip tie.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n    \r\n    <h2 id=\"can-a-lip-tie-cause-speech-problems\">\r\n      Can a Lip Tie Cause Speech Problems?    <\/h2>\r\n    \r\n    \n<p><strong>A lip tie generally does not cause speech problems later in life.<\/strong> It is rare, but\u00a0Dr. Ghaheri says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn some severe cases if the lip tie is causing the child some discomfort with mouth opening, because of tension, they may alter their oral anatomy to minimize pain, which could impact speech.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you suspect a lip tie is affecting your child&#8217;s speech development, talk to your doctor. He\/she <strong>may recommend your child see a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/Students\/Speech-Language-Pathologists\/#careers\">speech language pathologist<\/a><\/strong>, or a speech therapist.<\/p>\n    \r\n    <h2 id=\"can-a-lip-tie-cause-tooth-decay\">\r\n      Can a Lip Tie Cause Tooth Decay?    <\/h2>\r\n    \r\n    \n<p>In breastfed babies, <strong>an uncorrected lip tie can cause significant tooth decay, particularly in a baby&#8217;s upper front teeth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiddsteeth.com\/assets\/pdfs\/articles\/The_Influence_of_the_Maxillary_Frenum_on_the_Development_and_Pattern_of_Dental_Caries_on_Anterior_Teeth_in_Breastfeeding_Infants_Prevention,_Diagnosis_and_Treatment010%5b1%5d.pdf\">According to Dr. Lawrence Kotlow<\/a>, a lip tie prevents any residual milk from draining from the area between the upper lip and the gum, eventually causing bottle rot.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To prevent tooth decay, Dr. Kotlow recommends parents <strong>pay extra attention to oral hygiene\u00a0once the upper front teeth erupt<\/strong>, making sure there&#8217;s no residual milk in the baby&#8217;s mouth after feedings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If your child shows signs of enamel wear<\/strong>\u2014white spots or discoloration\u2014visit a dentist to determine a plan of action for better oral hygiene and whether any corrective care is needed.
