Walk onto any playground, and you’ll immediately notice several different parenting styles at work. On the jungle gym, there’s a mama hovering over her child to make sure he’s safe. Another mama watches on calmly from the benches as her barefooted child explores the mud puddles. A third mama races her child on the monkey bars.

We all have slightly different ways of parenting our children. And, interestingly, studies suggest this may have a real impact on our children—both in the short term and the long term.

Types of Parents

So what kind of parent are you? Even if you’re a natural mama, the way you parent can be very different.

 • Are you a tiger mama? You are all about a little tough love. Tiger mamas firmly believe that their main goal is to ensure their child succeeds in this world. You believe that a parent should be just that—not a friend.
 • A free range parent? You have no problem letting your kids run a little wild. Who cares if they’re covered in dirt, if they’re happy. And walking to school or playing outside alone? That’s no problem in your book. Free range parents main goal is to raise strong, independent children.
 • Attached to the max? Attachment parents are all about that parent-child bond. That looks a little different for everyone, but it likely means you’re a fan of the family bed, extended breastfeeding, and basically anything that helps you build a tight-knit family—even if it means time for yourself is limited.
 • Helicopter parent? Other people might see it as hovering, but you don’t view your style of parenting that way. Helicopter parents just want to do what’s best for their baby and keep them safe, and that generally means staying on top of everything—all the time.

So what type of parent are you? Do you have a hunch? Take our just-for-fun quiz to find out if you’re right!

Chill until ready to serve. Serve with graham crackers, strawberries, pineapple, bananas, or raspberries.

You’re nearing your due date (yay!), and by now, you’ve probably got your birth plan ready to go, but… do you need a postpartum care plan, too?

Before you scoff at the idea. Consider this: Global studies show that the standard of postpartum care is declining, even in countries like the United States. In fact, the United States has the highest maternal morbidity rate in the developed world.

Why? Dangerous conditions, like postpartum preeclampsia, go undiagnosed and the CDC estimates that nearly 40 percent of American mothers with postpartum depression never get proper care.

Because of this, it’s so vital to have a proper postpartum care plan in place.

In this article, we’ll cover:

 • What the current standard of postpartum care is and why it isn’t enough
 • Common health concerns every postpartum mama should know about
 • Plus, explore how the right postpartum care plan can help you stay healthy

The Problem with Postpartum Care

If you’ve ever watched Call the Midwives, you know that the majority of mid-twentieth century English mothers gave birth at home with midwives. After the delivery, midwives would continue to make house calls to check on both baby and mama.

Unfortunately, the model of care has shifted, and traditional healthcare professionals don’t make house calls. This is despite the fact that, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Committee Meeting in May 2018, postpartum women should:

 • Be in touch with their OBGYN during the first three postpartum weeks
 • Discuss infant care, sleep needs, and basic baby care with their OBGYN
 • Schedule a comprehensive postpartum assessment between six to 12 weeks postpartum that focuses on all needs of mama: physical, social, and psychological well-being.
 • Go over physical recovery needs with their OBGYN
 • Review mental and emotional needs with their OBGYN
 • Discuss current health needs (including nutrition and chronic condition management and sexual health needs)

But these standards aren’t often met.

Here’s what really happens…

Many women leave the hospital quickly with limited information on how to care for their body and what warning signs require a call to the OBGYN or midwife.

Once mama returns home, she probably won’t even speak with her doctor until a six-week checkup, which may entail the following:

But sadly, many of these appointments are rushed and focus on the latter part—birth control discussions. Too often mamas do not receive any guidance on postpartum nutrition, physical needs, or mental health needs.

Why is this a problem?

According to the World Health Organization, most maternal deaths are related to hemorrhaging and infections after childbirth.

And not just in the first 24 hours following delivery. Statistically, women are more likely to die a few days to a few weeks after birth. (source)

Women of Color and Post-Birth Complications

These stats are even more relevant for African American women, who are 243 percent (!) more likely to die from either pregnancy-related conditions or childbirth-related causes than women of other ethnicities. (source) Black women also have higher rates of morbidity associated with preeclampsia, placenta previa, placenta abruption, and postpartum hemorrhage. The worst part is that all of these conditions can be monitored and treated by an OBGYN or midwife.

This is prime evidence that most women aren’t getting the care they need during the crucial postpartum window.

Why is this? Mamas of color aren’t just at risk for complications because of potential genetic and lifestyle risk factors. Racism of hospital workers or even doctors can contribute to less-than-adequate healthcare. According to an article published by the American Heart Association, a bigger problem is this: African American women are often undervalued in medical settings.

This scary stat makes a postpartum care plan even more essential. If possible, look for fellow women of color to support you during your birth and afterward:

Why You Need a Postpartum Care Plan

All mothers deserve so much more.

We are hyper-vigilant about checking baby’s well-being (and rightly so!), but we need to do the same for moms.

Any marathon runner knows that the race is important—but they also know just how important the recovery is, too. Childbirth is a marathon, and the postpartum period is when mamas heal. During this recovery time (ancient cultures called this a lying-in!), mamas need to know about the biggest health concerns:

 • Postpartum pre-eclampsia: Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are often thought of as prenatal conditions, but it is possible to develop postpartum pre-eclampsia. It is a rare condition characterized by high blood pressure and protein in your urine after childbirth. Headaches, severe swelling, and blurred vision can be warning signs of pre-eclampsia.
 • Postpartum hemorrhaging: It’s normal to bleed after childbirth, but losing more than 1000 ml of blood during the first 24 hours can be a sign of postpartum hemorrhaging. Blood clots (larger than a golf ball) and severe bleeding (that fills a pad in an hour) can also be signs of hemorrhaging.

These two conditions are serious, but they aren’t the only healthcare concerns. Postpartum mamas should also know about other conditions, such as:

 • Heart conditions and cardiovascular disease: Postpartum cardiomyopathy (which means your heart isn’t pumping strongly enough) can occur up to five months after childbirth. (source)
 • Blood clots: The risk of serious blood clots (such as in the leg) extends three months after childbirth. (source)
 • Pelvic pain caused by pelvic organ prolapse: A pelvic organ prolapse refers to one of your pelvic organs (e.g., the uterus, bladder, and/or bowel) slipping out of its normal positions and sliding down towards the vagina. This condition can affect your ability to use the restroom comfortably, but it can also contribute to back pain and incontinence.
 • Diastasis recti: This condition refers to the separation of your abdominal muscles. This naturally happens during childbirth, but the gap doesn’t always return to normal. A gap bigger than 2.7 centimeters is considered to be diastasis recti. This can cause the “mom pooch,” but it can also contribute to incontinence.
 • C-section recovery issues like infection (which can lead to sepsis), pain, and delayed healing.
 • Postpartum depression: Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that develops in postpartum women due to shifting hormone levels. It’s characterized by feelings of sadness, anger, difficulty concentrating, and even a lack of interest in favorite hobbies.
 • Postpartum anxiety: Like postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety affects mothers shortly after childbirth. Postpartum anxiety is characterized by intense worry that affects your daily life. Studies show more women have postpartum anxiety—a whopping 17 percent of postpartum women!

Creating Your Own Postpartum Plan

So what can you do with this knowledge? Besides use this information to empower yourself, you can create a postpartum care plan to make sure your body and mind stay as healthy as possible. Here’s how:

1. Stock up on essentials

Many hospitals and birthing centers will send you home with the basics, but this may not be enough. Before your due date, consider stocking your home with your own postpartum kit. Padsicles, Rescue Remedy, and easy-to-grab snacks are just a few things that will make your recovery easier. For a more comprehensive postpartum kit, check out this post.

2. Rest

We live in a go-go-go society, but after you have a baby, your body needs rest—and lots of it. Most mothers need 30 to 40 days of rest and TLC. Studies show that most mothers are not even prepared for this period, so it is important to plan for rest. Not only does this give your body and mind time to heal, it also allows you plenty of time to focus on your baby and nurse in peace on demand.

To make sure that you get the rest you deserve, consider hiring a postpartum doula. Friends and family members can also be invaluable during this time, too.

3. Advocate for yourself

You don’t have to wait until the six-week postpartum check-up to see your healthcare provider. Talk to your doctor about checking in before the three-week mark as per the committee recommendations outlined above. This is especially important if you have other health conditions unrelated to pregnancy and childbirth.

If you suspect any issues during the postpartum period, don’t be afraid to mention them to your OBGYN or midwife. Speak up and demand to see your OBGYN or midwife—mention the ACOG guidelines if you need reinforcement. Don’t settle for dismissal. You know your body best and you can always seek a second opinion. Even if everything ends up okay, the peace of mind can be invaluable.

Even though you need care shortly after birth, you’ll continue to need care for a full year (yes, childbirth recovery can take a full year!), so don’t feel ashamed to check in with your doctor or midwife more frequently. This is especially good to remember if you feel like something is wrong.

4. Try Zuo Yuezi

In Asian cultures, most postpartum mothers adopt a practice called zuo yuezi, which translates to “confinement.” The zuo yuezi refers to the first 40 days after childbirth in which mama confines herself to the home. This is a confinement period in which mama settles cozily into the home, resting and eating warming foods. The majority of the time is spent nursing, bonding, and resting. Interested? You can learn more about First 40 Days here.

5. Focus on a nourishing diet

Although you may be anxious to shed the baby weight, this isn’t the time to focus on weight loss. Let food be your medicine. Nourishing food can help your body heal, promote breastmilk production, and provide you with energy. Food plays a big role in supporting your mental health, too! One study found that supplements (including blueberry juice) helped reduce the risk of postpartum depression.

Not sure what to eat while nursing? Check out this post.

6. Get help

You know the phrase: it takes a village to raise a child. It takes a village just to recover from childbirth, and there is no shame in asking for help. Here a few ideas you can use when creating your postpartum plan:

 • Hire a postpartum doula
 • Ask friends or family members to make meals for you (or sign up for a meal delivery service)
 • Ask friends for help with specific tasks (like chipping in for a doula or running to the store for more pads, diapers, so you don’t have to venture out while still recovering)
 • Ask for a friend or family member to come hold your baby while you take care of yourself (like taking a sitz bath, a shower, or even just a nice nap)
 • Have a friend sit with you and chat while you nurse your baby (sometimes just being present with another adult is comforting)
 • Arrange for someone else to drive you to any follow-up appointments
 • Hire a cleaning service to take care of the household chores (at least during your initial healing period)
 • Ask for help from your midwife or OBGYN if you’re struggling with mental health issues after delivery

Asking for help is one of the bravest things you can do, and sometimes it’s the only way to find the time and energy to truly take care of yourself.

Golden milk is trending right now, thanks to its wonderful therapeutic and detox value. But how many of us are drinking it daily?

Not many, I bet. It’s not exactly easy to mix up a batch of this ancient remedy every morning!

Until now… ?

Here’s an easy golden milk recipe that has all the benefits of the original—and then some—but takes just a few seconds to whip up!

What Is Golden Milk?

This liquid gold originated with ancient Ayurveda thousands of years ago. Traditionally, it’s made with cow’s milk, oil, spices, and turmeric. There are many variations out there, but they follow the same basic guidelines.

Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory that boasts a wide variety of amazing health benefits, including:

 • Supporting healthy digestion and liver function
 • Protecting the heart and brain
 • Supporting the immune system
 • Soothing joint discomfort and relieving inflammation
 • Supporting the nervous system
 • Promoting wound healing and skin health
 • Possibly protecting against diabetes and cancer

To Cook or Not to Cook

Traditionally, golden milk is made with cow’s milk, which is what we’re using here (although you can certainly change it out for almond, cashew or coconut milk.) Ayurveda teaches that only boiled milk should be used, as it decreases mucus production and enhances digestive function better than raw milk.

You can choose to follow the ancient technique and boil your golden milk, or you can keep it raw. I’ve included details for both options in the recipe directions below.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is another key player in this recipe. Its healthy saturated fats may help to protect the brain from degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, as well as satiate hunger longer and even help you lose weight. And coconut oil’s antimicrobial properties make it the perfect food for maintaining optimal gut flora balance.

Spices to Increase Flavor and Nutrition

Through the centuries, we’ve learned more about the benefits of spices and how to combine them for maximum effect. Case in point: we’re adding black pepper to this recipe because it increases the bioavailability of turmeric, making it even more potent and powerful. We’re also adding ginger for optimized digestion, reduction of inflammation, and to help take the edge off the bitter turmeric taste.

We also add raw honey for enzymes, antibacterial properties, and of course, a lovely taste. Finally, we’re adding delicious cinnamon. It’s high in antioxidants and helps to regulate blood sugar. Even better, the cinnamon gives this golden milk a nice chai flavor for the best taste possible (which will motivate you to have it daily!).

Creating the Turmeric Paste

The key to making this recipe a daily part of your routine is making a big batch of turmeric paste first. This way, you’ll always have on hand the concentrated paste that brings the golden milk to life.

Then, each morning, you’ll just need a little spoonful of the turmeric paste to mix into your daily cup of Joe or herbal tea. This ensures that you quickly and easily get your daily dose of golden milk without all the hassle.

Buyer Beware: Turmeric With Lead

Be sure you are buying pure, organic, high-quality turmeric from trusted sellers like this one or this one. Some less expensive brands can add lead to their spice to increase its weight and keep costs low. Other manufacturers may add lead-laden dyes to give a more gold appearance to their turmeric.

Take Your Pick

You can use either organic coffee beans in your cup of golden milk, or you can use the herbal-based, liver-loving Dandy blend. I tested it both ways and found that the regular coffee hides the turmeric flavor more, while the Dandy Blend helps to showcase it. Although both are delicious, it just depends on your preference.

Turmeric Paste Recipe

As I mentioned earlier, you will need to make the turmeric paste first to have on hand for your quick daily dose.

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup organic turmeric (where to buy)
 • 1 1/2 tsp organic black pepper
 • 1T cinnamon
 • 1 T ginger powder
 • ½ cup coconut oil (where to buy)
 • 1 3/4 cups filtered water
 • 6 T raw honey (where to buy)

Directions:

 1. Combine all the ingredients for the turmeric paste in a saucepan—except for the raw honey—and heat over medium heat, whisking frequently. Once the mixture begins to boil, whisk constantly and let it boil for 10 minutes. Boiling it is crucial to getting a smooth end result and reducing the bitter flavor of the turmeric.
 2. Remove the saucepan from the heat, and allow it to cool for about 10-15 minutes, until it’s cool enough to touch. The mixture may have separated a little, but that’s OK. Add the raw honey, and whisk vigorously to combine. The honey helps to emulsify the mixture, and gives the paste a lovely taste.
 3. Store your turmeric paste in a glass jar. The mixture should last for several months in the fridge.

Easy Golden Milk Recipe

Ingredients:

 • 1–2 tsps turmeric paste
 • ½ cup grass-fed, raw milk
 • ½ cup double-strength coffee or Dandy Blend

Directions:

 1. Start by making your coffee or Dandy Blend, but make it twice as strong as usual.
 2. Add your hot coffee or Dandy Blend to a mug and add in 1 tsp. of the turmeric paste. Mix well until the paste dissolves fully into liquid.
 3. Next, gently heat your milk. Froth it in a blender, or use a milk frother.
 4. Pour your bubbly milk onto your coffee mixture. Top with a dash of cinnamon or coconut sugar.
 5. ENJOY!

If you’re not a latte person, follow steps 1 and 2, then add your cream/milk if desired.

Other Turmeric Paste Uses

Looking for more ways to enjoy your turmeric paste?

Turmeric paste also tastes great in…

 • yogurt (1 tsp per cup),
 • in smoothies (like this Pumpkin Pie one)
 • or on top of sweet potatoes or butternut squash (yum!)

You can even apply the paste to your face as a mask for gorgeous skin!

How to Choose a Whole House Water Filter (and Why You Need One) https://www.mamanatural.com/whole-house-water-filter/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=whole-house-water-filter https://www.mamanatural.com/whole-house-water-filter/#comments Fri, 19 Nov 2021 16:11:26 +0000 https://www.mamanatural.com/?p=242595 A whole house water filter provides safer drinking water, healthier showers, less wear-and-tear on appliances, and is eco-friendly too.

The post How to Choose a Whole House Water Filter (and Why You Need One) appeared first on Mama Natural.

]]>

As mamas, we spend a surprising amount of time thinking about water: the quantity of water we drink, especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding, when babies can drink water, and how to make sure we’re drinking the healthiest water possible.

Many of us probably have filters in our fridges, but have you ever considered a whole house filter? I have, and I’m here to share everything my family loves about it.

In this blog, I’ll cover everything you need to know about whole house filters, including:

 • What whole house water filters are
 • Benefits of a whole house filter
 • How to choose a whole house filter
 • How much a whole house filter system will cost
 • How to get your city’s water report

What Is a Whole House Water Filtration System?

Maybe you have a pitcher with a filter sitting in your fridge right now. Maybe you use the water that comes from a filtered water dispenser in your fridge. Or, maybe you have a portable gravity-fed system that you bring camping. Regardless, you’re probably used to the idea of drinking filtered water.

I know what you’re thinking: I already use filtered water, so why do I need a whole house filter?!

A whole house water filter does so much more than what a 1-gallon pitcher filter can do! A whole house filtration system treats water as it enters the main water line into your home. Also known as a point of entry (POE) filter, this means that the water that flows from every faucet or through any appliance is clean and filtered. Whole house water filters are point of entry (POE) filters, so whether you’re brushing your teeth in the bathroom or filling up the wash tub to give Fido a bath, rest assured that every single drop of water in your house is pure and filtered.

How to Choose a Whole House Filter System

When it comes to choosing a whole house filter, you’ll need to gather a few key facts before determining which filter is right for you.

You’ll need to know:

 1. How many bathrooms are in your house (helps determine the right size filter)
 2. How many people in your home (helps determine drinking water usage)
 3. Information about your current water (helps determine your goals of a water filter)

The Best Whole House Water Filter System

While there are many different whole house filter systems available, we chose Radiant Life for our home. Radiant Life is a family-run, woman-owned online health and wellness company specializing in food-based supplements, nutrient dense foods, eco-friendly housewares and water filtration and purification.

We chose Radiant Life for many reasons, but one of the most important reasons is that their customer service is top-notch.

Customer service

As a company, Radiant Life is extremely accessible, and you can speak with a water expert who will recommend the perfect water filter for your home. This is especially important if you’re new to the idea of house filtration systems and aren’t sure what exactly you need. We even emailed Radiant Life our local water report, and their water expert incorporated our specific water needs into their recommendation. We weren’t just sold a filter. We were matched with the right filter for our family’s specific water and our specific needs.

Pure water you can rely on

Not only does Radiant Life have stellar customer service, the filter itself is what initially drew us into the company. We chose the Radiant Life Series 4 whole house filter, as it was designed to remove chlorine, chloramines, and even fluoride from municipal water.

Key features of this whole house water filtration system include:

 • Removal of chlorine, chloramines, fluoride, heavy metals and VOCs in one tank
 • Removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like paint thinner, pharmaceuticals, and gasoline that leached into groundwater
 • No need to replace a monthly filter — this baby lasts for one million gallons!

Options for municipal and well water

The Radiant Life filtration series include the Series 2, Series 4, and Series 6. Series 2 and 4 are designed for those with municipal water, but what if you don’t? Even if you have well water, you’re not out of luck. The Series 6 water filter is designed to accommodate those with municipal or well water. This whole house filtration system removes everything that the Series 4 does, plus iron, hydrogen sulfide, bacteria, algae, and fungi.

The Series 6 does all of this while retaining essential minerals that are naturally present in your water supply.

Oh, and did we mention the Series 6 filter lasts for 1.25 million gallons! Talk about maintenance-free!

Benefits of a Whole House Water Filter System

Water is essential for life. 60% of our bodies are made up of water! We drink it, we cook with it, we clean our bodies with it, and we bathe our little ones in it.

But even if our water tastes and smells good, there can still be hidden contaminants. Lead, fluoride, and even pharmaceutical residue can hide in water. Not to mention, hard water can take a toll on your appliances.

Enter: the whole house water filtration system. A whole house filter isn’t just about making water potable (it probably already is). A whole house filter is about so much more.

Let’s take a look at the benefits of a whole house filter:

1. Safer drinking water

Whether you have municipal water or private well water, it’s probably already potable, meaning it’s safe to drink. So, if your water is already potable, why get a filter? A whole house filter makes it safer. Most water in the United States contains some level of contamination due to pollution, and the only way to know for sure what’s in your water is by having it testing professionally.

You can also learn more about your water by reading your town’s water report. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires all water suppliers to provide a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) (a water report) to consumers each year by July 1. You might receive yours in the mail with your water bill, but you can also find it online through the EPA’s database. The water report provides a ton of valuable information about your water quality, including any detected contaminants.

Once you know your starting point, it’s easier to see how a whole house water filtration system can benefit you. For example, if your report shows fluoride in your water, then you can feel good about investing in a house filter that removes fluoride.

Installing a water filtration system ensures that you and your family drinking pure, healthy, and delicious-tasting water.

2. Healthier showers

Whole house filters can do many things. We often think of filters as making water healthier to drink, but water doesn’t just enter your body through your mouth. Remember, your skin is your largest organ, so it’s important the water you shower or bath in is just as healthy. You wouldn’t want to soak in a vat of toxins! Yuck!

Chemicals like chlorine can cause skin irritation and/or dry skin — even at “safe” levels. A whole house filtration system treats all of the water in your home, including the water you shower or bathe in.

3. Less wear-and-tear on your appliances

Filtered water is good for you… but it’s also good for your appliances! Who knew!? Hard water, which contains hard minerals, can shorten the life of your appliances if those minerals build up. This includes everything from the water dispenser in your fridge to your dishwasher to your hot water heater to coffee pot.

4. Better for the environment

While bottled water can deliver safe, filtered water on-the-go, it can wreak havoc on the environment. An estimated 40 billion water bottles are used each month … and if you do the math, that’s about 1 million bottles each minute. Ahh! You might be one person (or one family) but you can do your part by not contributing to that number — and a whole house filter can help you do your part in protecting the environment.

Whole house water FAQs

Investing in a whole house filter isn’t a decision to make lightly. After all, water is the fuel that goes into your body so you want to make sure you’re choosing the right one. Here are a few common questions regarding whole house filters.

Does a whole house water filter need a drain?

Yes! Whole house filtrations systems are typically installed wherever the main water supply enters your home. For many, this is the basement, but if you don’t have a basement, it could be your garage or even a water closet. For climates where freezing temperatures are highly unlikely, your system could even be installed outside. Regardless of where it’s installed, you’ll need access to an electrical outlet and a drain.

How long should you run water after changing a whole house filter?

Typically, you should run your water for about five minutes after changing the filter. However, keep in mind that this number can vary depending on which brand of filtration system you choose. You can also re-test your water to ensure the filter is working correctly.

What about trace minerals?

Filtering water removes a lot of elements from your water: heavy metals, fluoride, VOCs, etc. But what about essential minerals? Yes, the whole house filter removes those too. If you’re interested in remineralizing your water, you can add a special filter to the Point-of-Use (POU) AKA your faucets. The 14-Stage Biocompatible Water Purification System complements the whole house filter so that you can enjoy delicious mineral water that is also safe bathing water.

If you’re not concerned about trace minerals (or if you consume your minerals via supplement), you do not need a POU filter in your house.

Do whole house water filters affect water pressure?

When installed correctly, a whole house water filtration system shouldn’t affect your water pressure. Some whole house filters (like Radiant Life) come with installation instructions, but keep in mind, if you’re uncomfortable installing one, you can always call a licensed and bonded plumber to install it for you.

Does a water filter reduce hardness?

A water softener and a water filter both improve your water, but they do different things. If you want to remove hardness from your water and soften it, you’d want a water softener. A water softener doesn’t filter out hard minerals like calcium or magnesium. Rather, the water softener exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium ions. Softened water is great for your hair, skin, and your pipes, but it’s not a replacement for a water filter.

If you already have a water softener, it is removing the hard minerals from your water, but it won’t:

 • Improve the taste of your water
 • Improve the purity of your water
 • Remove fluoride or chlorine
 • Remove VOCs
 • Remove heavy metal
 • Remove waterborne pathogens

How much should a whole house water filtration system cost?

This answer varies depending on the brand and size of your filter. Key factors that influence price include:

 • How many bathrooms are in your house
 • Estimated water usage (and how many people in your home)
 • What type of water you have and what (if any) added features you select
 • Installation costs (DIY or professional)

With all of these customizations in place, a whole house filter can run anywhere from $600 to $5,000. However, many systems include lifetime warranties and essentially zero maintenance.

Why is water sterilized?

The goal of disinfection of public water is to eliminate the pathogens that are responsible for waterborne diseases. This is a serious health risk as the World Health Organization warns that ” “every year more than 3.4 million people die as a result of water-related diseases, making it the leading cause of disease and death around the world.”

Most municipal water sources clean water with chlorine. This does an amazing job at making water safe to drink — and cutting back on waterborne diseases. While cleaning water is 100% necessary, using a whole house filter goes the next step to then remove the chlorine.

Does a water filter remove bacteria?

Not all water filters remove bacteria, so it’s important to double check and compare all of the filters you are considering. Even among one brand, there are many different types of filters. If you have well water, you should definitely consider a filter that does remove bacteria, fungus, and algae.

Joovv is the leading maker of in-home red light therapy devices. But are they worth the investment? Here's my review of the Joovv Solo.

We have lots of things to deal with as mamas. Pregnancy, nursing, sleep deprivation, eating on the run — not to mention Coronavirus or other toxins in our environment! I am always looking for ways to improve my health with simple, evidence-based, and natural strategies.

One new addition to my wellness toolbox is the Joovv light. I’m loving this device and here’s why…

We Are Beings of Light

How often have you heard that humans are beings of light? It’s often discussed casually in regards to spirituality or transcendence, but the reality is that our bodies contains light — yes, really!

According to a 2017 study published in the International Journal of Yoga, your body contains two sources of energy: bioelectrons and biophotons. Biophotons are light particles created within your body! In other words, you don’t just contain light — your body creates light particles.

Jellyfish Slowly Swimming Underwater With Pink bioluminescence Light

No, this doesn’t mean you’ll be glowing any time soon — the light energy is 1000x weaker than what your naked eye can detect — but it is a really fascinating topic to explore. Why do you need to make light particles anyway? According to an article published in the MIT Technology Review, your cells use this light energy to talk to each other, similar to how photons are used during photosynthesis.

Biophoton emissions (the process of your body creating and emitting light particles) is much, much weaker than the bioluminescence you might seen in a marine animal or jelly fish, but these light particles still serve an important purpose, even if you can’t see them.

Biophotons play a role in how your cells communicate and how they grow, divide, replicate, and heal.

Not only are we beings of light, but we also need light to thrive. Our bodies were designed to soak up the sunshine. For example, our optic nerve sets our circadian rhythm by light, and a well-tuned circadian rhythm affects your mind, body, and soul.

That’s where the Joovv Light comes in.

What Is the Joovv Light

Red light therapy is designed to promote better health by delivering a dose of light that can enhance your cellular function. Here’s how it works:

 • Red and near infrared light (red and near infrared being specific, proven wavelengths of light) helps the powerhouses (mitochondria) of your cells do their jobs more efficiently.
 • Your mitochondria make energy that powers your whole body, and when they’re working at full capacity, with less oxidative stress, you’re likely to look and feel better.

That’s the reader’s digest version, of course. Wavelengths of light can be a super complex topic, but here’s the main takeaway: we need light for our body to function optimally, and light therapy can help fill those gaps when we can’t get enough sunlight from our environment everyday (due to weather, seasons, or just not getting outside enough every day).

Enter light therapy… light is simply wavelengths of energy, and there are some awesome light devices on the market. My favorite is Joovv.

Here are 10 reasons to consider the Joovv light:

1. We spend a lot of time indoors.

Studies that show just how much time we spend inside… which is not how we are biologically designed. Think about it from an ancestral viewpoint: we used to be outdoors for most of the day. Farming, hunting, gathering berries or fruit, harvesting grains, tending to the livestock — all of these things took place outdoors.

Even in the chilly climates, life didn’t stop. The Norwegian say, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.”

Over 50% of the American population spends less than 5 hours outside — each week! Yikes! To put it another way, most Americans spend only 7.6% of their time outside, which is only a smidge more than the time they spend driving in their car (5%). That means most people simply do not get enough light for optimal health and cellular function.

Light therapy devices like Joovv may help offset this imbalance by providing healthy light in your home, no matter the weather. Joovv isn’t a replacement for sunlight (you should always get outside!), but it can fill the gaps and help supplement your light intake when getting out in the sun isn’t possible.

2. Red light boosts our ENERGY!

Not only does red light help mitigate the effects of spending so much time inside, but red light also boosts your energy levels. Remember, what we said about red light therapy and how it affects mitochondria? Well, you can thank your mitochondria for this energy burst.

Wavelengths of natural light stimulate your mitochondria. As “the powerhouse of the cell,” the mitochondria produce more energy. This energy is known as ATP (adenosine triphosphate), and it’s produced during the cellular respiration process. ATP energy fuels everything our bodies do. When your body has ample ATP and uses it efficiently, you feel good, you look good, and you don’t feel zapped of energy.

3. Red light is excellent for our hormonal systems.

Remember that the mitochondria are improved by red light therapy and they help increase ATP, the “life currency” of our body. With this in mind, it makes sense that red light therapy can promote hormonal health, including your thyroid, adrenal glands, and reproductive organs. In studies, thyroid and testosterone production improved with red light.

Japanese researchers also studied the effect of red light therapy on women who struggled with infertility. The study followed women with “severe infertility”, many of whom did not have success with IVF. About 68% of these women were able to successfully deliver a baby. (source)

electromagnetic spectrum diagram showing Red light has a wavelength of 600–700 nm, and it visible light

4. Red light has proven anti-inflammatory effects.

Red light has a wavelength of 600–700 nm, and it falls under the “visible light” on the electromagnetic spectrum. Studies show that light in this range can penetrate the skin more easily, especially when compared to blue light (source). Thanks to its penetrability, red light therapy can also help reduce inflammation in the body.

Dr. Michael Hamblin of Harvard Medical School is a leading researcher who studies red light therapy and its effects on combating inflammation. He found that when red light stimulates the mitochondria to make energy (ATP), the cells work more efficiently. As a result, cells increase their production of healing antioxidants while reducing inflammation. This is particularly good news if you have arthritis, injuries, or other inflammation-related disorders.

5. Red light helps your sleep.

Maybe you’ve read about my blue-light blocking strategies and how I wear these nerdy glasses every night at sundown?! We’re talking about the same principles of light here, too. Blue light (the kind of light that comes from your cell phone or TV screen) can delay the release of melatonin, which can make it harder to fall asleep at night and wake up feeling rested.

The opposite is also true. Red light can help you sleep better. One study found that red light therapy improves the quality of sleep and helps prevent sleep disorders from developing in the first place.

6. Red light is healing for skin.

If you take a peek at the menu selection at many spas, you might be surprised to see that red light is used to improve skin. Red light therapy is used to:

 • Reduce the signs of aging
 • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
 • Reduce blemishes and acne
 • Reduce redness and other irritations

Studies show that the right light therapy (633nm in this study) promotes wound healing, too.

7. Red light is good for mama brain.

Feeling a little frazzled or worn down? Red light therapy is good for boosting your mood, sharpening your mental focus, and improving your ability to concentrate. There are a few ways red light therapy supports your brain:

 • Better sleep = more brain power
 • More ATP = more energy and less brain fog

This is hugely helpful for the “mama brain”!

8. Red light can help build muscle.

As we age, we lose muscle tone. Unfortunately, this process can start in your early 30’s… yikes! To make the most of your workout, it’s important to support your body during the recovery process — that’s the time when you actually start to build the muscles after your efforts in the gym. Eating protein-rich meals after a workout, getting a good night of sleep, and staying hydrated all help your body recover and build lean muscle mass.

Red light therapy can help you, too.

Red light therapy makes your cells work more efficiently — which aids in your workout and recovery processes. It also boosts your energy and helps you get the sleep you need so you can power through your workout. Studies also show that red light helps to prevent muscle fatigue and injury. (source)

9. Joovv is great for busy moms.

Joovv isn’t the only light-based therapy available. Infrared light products have also grown in popularity thanks to their many benefits. Unlike infrared saunas, though, Joovv isn’t intended to make you hot and sweaty. Instead, for optional results, you only need to spend about 10 minutes a day to get your daily dose of light, which is great for busy mamas ?.

And if I’ve got a little extra time to spare? No problem! When I want to do more areas of my body, I do 20 minutes max.

10. Not all red lights are created equal.

This is so true for any product, but if you’re researching products with therapeutic benefits, it’s important to get the real deal.

There are some red lights on Amazon, but just because it features a red light bulb doesn’t mean you’ll get the effects you want. Remember, true therapeutic red lights refer to the wavelength of the light— not the color of the bulb. The lights you see on Amazon are more for heating, and they aren’t in the right nanometer (nm) ranges.

Joovv is UL-listed and created using the Medical Devices standards. If you dig into the red light therapy market even a little bit, it becomes pretty clear that Joovv is the leading brand, making the highest-quality devices, and doing the most to educate people about light and health.

Marine Collagen vs. Beef Collagen: What You Need to Know https://www.mamanatural.com/marine-collagen-vs-beef-collagen/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=marine-collagen-vs-beef-collagen https://www.mamanatural.com/marine-collagen-vs-beef-collagen/#comments Mon, 30 Nov 2020 15:57:43 +0000 https://www.mamanatural.com/?p=212569 Marine collagen is a healthy source of amino acids, and it’s perfect for pregnant mamas. But is it better than bovine collagen?

The post Marine Collagen vs. Beef Collagen: What You Need to Know appeared first on Mama Natural.

]]>

When you’re eating for two, you likely focus on good sources of protein, fresh fruits, and veggies — but don’t forget about collagen! Collagen delivers a healthy serving of amino acids, which are essential for your growing baby — and reducing stretch marks. And collagen is also very high in protein.

But which is better for you, marine collagen or bovine (beef) collagen?

In this article, I’ll answer all of your questions, including

What Is Marine Collagen?

Collagen seems to be a trendy buzz word lately, but collagen isn’t just a fad. It’s a protein that makes up much of your body — including your bones, skin, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues. Humans aren’t the only animal who have collagen in their bodies. Pigs, cows, fish — they’ve all got collagen!

Some people think of collagen only as a beauty product (or maybe as a joint supplement), but it can be an asset in your pregnancy supplement routine too. Collagen strengthens joints and ligaments to help your body carry your little bundle of your joint during pregnancy. Not only that, but collagen can help stop stretch marks from developing. Woohoo!

So what is marine collagen? Marine collagen is a hypoallergenic protein derived from fish skin or scales. I know what you’re thinking: is that safe or healthy to consume fish scales?! Yes!

Let’s take a look at how marine collagen is harvested:

 • Fish are caught
 • Fish skins are washed
 • Fish skins are then hydrolyzed

Hydrolyzed marine collagen allows us to better digest the collagen. “Hydrolyze” comes from two Greek words: hydro (water) + lysis (break apart). To hydrolyze the fish scales means that water breaks apart the scales into smaller particles, so that the collagen peptides (what’s left over from the hydrolyzation process) are easier for us to digest. (source)

Smaller particles make a big difference when it comes to getting all those benefits from your collagen supplement. Fish collagen is absorbed up to 1.5 times faster (and more efficiently) into your body. This means that marine collagen has superior bioavailability over beef or porcine collagen. This is due to its smaller particle size compared to other types of collagen.

Beef Versus Marine Collagen

The most obvious difference between these two types of collagen is the animal source. Marine collagen, as the name suggests, comes from fish. The most common sources of marine collagen are cod, pollock, and haddock. Beef collagen comes from the bone marrow of cows while porcine collagen comes from the marrow of pigs. The source of the protein isn’t the only difference, though. Marine collagen differs from bovine collagen in a few ways. Most notably, marine collagen is absorbed by the body faster.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the differences between the two:

Marine Collagen Bovine Collagen
What is the source? Wild-caught Farm-raised
Is it sustainable? Very Not likely
What is the sodium content? Low High
Speed of absorption High Low
Type of collagen Type I Type I & III
Exposure to antibiotics and hormones? No Possibly

If you do opt for bovine collagen, be sure to look for a brand that pledges to use only grass-fed, antibiotic-free beef.

Different Types of Collagen

If you look at the chart above, you might wonder what “type of collagen” really means. Believe it or not, there are many different types of collagen, and they are all identified by a number. As much as 80-90% of the collagen in your body is made up of type I, II, and III. (source)

Type I is the most prevalent type of collagen in your body. It makes your skin, nails, bones, hair, organs, bones, and ligaments — and marine collagen is an excellent source of type I collagen. Type II is another important type of collagen; it’s responsible for your joint health and digestive lining.

Even though your body makes its own collagen, it’s still not a bad ideal to consider using a collagen supplement. Did you know that you start to lose collagen as you age? After age 30, our collagen levels start to drop by 1.5% per year, and a supplement can help combat this loss. (source)

Benefits of Marine Collagen

Like beef collagen, marine collagen supports healthy skin, hair, and nails. Wild-caught marine collagen offers many additional benefits, including:

 • Skin rejuvenation. Collagen helps your skin stay hydrated and supple.
 • Improved digestion. Amino acids in collagen, such as glycine, glutamine, and proline support your intestinal tract as well as your stomach.
 • Promotes strong bones. Marine collagen helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus — which are essential for your bones and your growing baby’s bones!
 • Liver detox. Glycine (which is one of the many amino acids in collagen) promotes liver detox and liver repair. Liver support is a must when your liver is detoxing for two!
 • Improved energy levels. What pregnant mama doesn’t need a little boost? You can thank glycine, which helps turn glucose into energy for your cells.
 • Safe sources of collagen. Wild caught fish is free from pesticide residue, antibiotic treatment, and GMO-based feed.

And here’s the best perk of marine collagen: it’s oh-so-easy to use. Powder supplements stir easily into coffee, tea, soups, or smoothies. Unlike cod liver oil, which can sometimes taste fishy, this is one pescatarian supplement that is odorless and tasteless. Yay!

Best Marine Collagen

While there are many types of marine collagen on the market, the five key aspects of a good supplement should be:

 1. Wild-caught
 2. Free of any additives, preservatives, or artificial flavors
 3. Easy to mix in
 4. Neutral flavor
 5. Odorless

Looking for a new supplement? Check out these four marine collagen powders:

A note on gummy supplements: It’s tempting to grab some gummy supplements, but the gummy versions often include artificial flavors, preservatives, and dyes to make them more palatable.

How to Use Marine Collagen

Using a powder supplement can be easy. You might think that a powder gets clumpy, but if you make sure your collagen label says “dissolves easily” you won’t have any issues.

Here are ten ways you can use marine collagen:

 1. Mix in a hot drink. Add a scoop (or two) of your collagen of choice to a hot tea or coffee.
 2. Add your powder to a smoothie — and your blender will incorporate the powder evenly. Marine collagen works well with any smoothie, including nut butter smoothies or fruity ones.
 3. Whisk into a cold drink. Use a whisk when blending into a cold drink like lemonade, ice tea, or juice. (This whisk works well for blending collagen powders, protein powders, etc. into cold (or hot) drinks.)
 4. Add to soup. Use an emulsion blender to incorporate the powder into hot soups.
 5. Add a little punch to your bone broth. Stir your collagen into your bone broth and take your sipping broth to the next (nutritional) level.
 6. Add collagen to your protein shake. Some mamas need extra protein during pregnancy, and if you supplement with protein, go ahead and some extra collagen in your shake too.
 7. Sprinkle collagen powder into energy balls. Nut butter, collagen, coconut flakes, rolled oats, and coconut oil create a tasty — and extremely nutrient dense — bite.
 8. Add to yogurt bowls. Smoothie bowls and yogurt parfaits are delicious and good sources of protein and calcium for mamas-to-be.
 9. Stir into pancake mixes. Or banana bread. Or waffles. The options are endless!
 10. Mix into hot cereals. Collagen mixes well into hot oatmeal, or you can stir into overnight oats too.

It’s that time of year again — time to honor the fathers in our lives with a little token of appreciation for all the hard work they do.

But, if you’re anything like me, it can be a challenge to know what to get. My husband Michael is notoriously hard to buy for.
